She was an outstanding chancellor and crisis manager, but she did not become the chancellor of successful reforms
The political era of German Chancellor Angela Merkel is running to its end. Experts from various political and geopolitical centers, summing up the results of her many years in such a responsible position, predict at the same time how this may affect future events in Europe. They mean what A. Merkel leaves as legacy to her colleagues for further work. After all, her long tenure in such a position somewhat “mothballed” the progressive development not only of Germany but of Europe in general. And the cataclysms that accompany today’s transatlantic cooperation only underscore the economic selfishness of the German leadership under A. Merkel.
Another episode is her attitude to Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. After all, the Chancellor kept emphasizing the exclusively economic color of this project, saying that it does not violate the principles of the EU Energy Charter, potentially does not threaten anyone and does not make anyone dependent on Russia. A. Merkel began to mention Ukraine with its national interests already at the final stage of the construction of the gas pipeline, when it was already necessary to decide with the United States on the position on Nord Stream 2. Then they began to reassure the world community about the possibility of imposing sanctions on Moscow if it uses gas as an energy weapon.

…Russian gas is becoming a weapon and a means of putting pressure on Europe and the United States not in the future, but on the eve of this winter… |
The irony of this action is that while A. Merkel and J. Biden were agreeing to complete the construction of the gas pipeline and its certification, Moscow once again brutally dispelled the illusions, accelerating the certification process by raising gas prices in Europe. That is, gas is becoming a weapon and a means of putting pressure on the governments of Europe and the United States not in the future, but on the eve of this winter. And in the east of Ukraine, at this time, the Russian armed forces are again being built up, a strike group of Russian troops is being formed, which is no longer associates with the planned exercises. And this does not cause any traditional “concern” for Western politicians, they do not try to put pressure on the aggressor, while the use of a combat drone by the Ukrainian military and the destruction of the occupiers’ artillery gun caused a “concern” in Brussels. You may ask: “why?” The answer is obvious — it is a habit of double standards in politics and an outright reluctance to disturb their zone of comfort, which became a characteristic feature of European prosperity, in particular, in Germany under A. Merkel.
