China Versus Hong Kong

Beijing Has Opened a New Security Office in Hong Kong

With the adoption of the Hong Kong national security law and the opening of a new Security Office, the Chinese authorities began to demonstrate their presence in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The appearance of such an office provoked widespread protests of public and international community. At the heart of the Office is the new Chinese law on security in this former British colony, by the adoption of which Beijing responded to last year’s months-long (and sometimes brutal) mass protests of democratic forces.

The new law allows Chinese state security services to operate openly in the special administrative region. The Security Office itself is the central part of such a presence. Under the law on Hong Kong’s security, Chinese authorities can monitor possible national security breaches in the region. Until now, this was done exclusively by the police and the judiciary of Hong Kong itself.
