Libya is important to Turkey not only in the context of the format of bilateral relations, but also as a potentially important country in North Africa.
In recent decades, Turkey has had the largest economic relations with Libya, so the Turks traditionally see it as their “gateway to Africa”. In other words, Turkish-Libyan relations are an important component of Turkey’s policy on the African continent.
A military presence in Libya will allow Ankara to intensify and secure the penetration of Turkish business into African markets. Ankara’s activity with regard to Libya in 2019–2020 is aimed at consolidating Turkey’s position in that country and in the Eastern Mediterranean. An important component of such actions is Turkey’s military assistance to Libya’s Government of National Accord.
