Hungary’s Risky Friendship with China

Viktor Orbán Likes the Role of Provocateur in Europe

As part of the “Eastern Opening policy”, the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is stepping up ties with China. Thus, one of our western neighbors seeks to bring its economic activity to a higher level than it is, without much regard for the European Union’s policy towards Beijing. But the benefits of opaque projects are ambiguous.

China’s comprehensive and persistent expansion into Europe does not stop. And Hungary, with its pro-Russian government, under the leadership of Viktor Orbán, is demonstratively contemptuous of the EU’s common values, which is confirmed once again by its economic policy of flirting with China. This does not improve its geopolitical weight at all, at the same time, it increases the degree of the country’s economic and political dependence on China, which is persistent in its activities.

Viktor Orbán likes the role of provocateur, by which he is known in Europe, according to an article in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. He demonstratively opposes himself to his European counterparts, seeking to gain the fame of a principled politician for whom the fate of Hungary is first. But where does the principledness of the Hungarian Prime Minister go when it comes to relations with China! He immediately becomes very accommodating.
