China’s Rise as a Global Security Actor: Implications for NATO

A joint study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies

The London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), which specializes in geopolitics, bilateral and multilateral relations and global security studies, and the Berlin-based Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), which is considered one of the most known European institutions for the study of modern China, have published a joint study on modern China and its influence in the world and in Europe in particular.

China’s fierce competition with the United States for world dominance, its aggressive policy and threats toward its neighbors using “soft power”, illusory appeal of economic cooperation, the need to look for a compromise between dictatorial methods of governing the state and its economy, violation the Western-style democratic principles — these are just some of the challenges of coexistence of Western countries with modern China.
