Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa (1894-1984). Soviet physicist; in 1937 discovered the superfluidity of liquid helium; In 1978 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his fundamental discoveries and inventions in the field of low temperature physics.
Fearlessness – one of most characteristic features of Kapitsa’s – a scientist and a citizen. After the Soviet authorities did not allow him to return to Cambridge in autumn 1934, he realized that in a totalitarian state in which he had to work, everything was decided by the top leadership of the country. With this leadership he began a direct and frank conversation.
From 1934 to 1983, Pyotr Kapitsa had written more than 300 letters to the Kremlin. Of these, to Stalin – 50, to Molotov – 71, to Malenkov – 63, to Khrushchev – 26, to Andropov, to Brezhnev. Thanks to his interference, many theoretical physicists were rescued from death in prisons and labor camps during Stalin’s terror were rescued. In the last years of his life he defended Andrei Sakharov.
The success of his organizational activities was based on a simple principle: “To lead means not to interfere with good people doing their work.”
