Iran — Saudi Arabia: The Middle Eastern Cold War

The Position of the Official Germany

The Federal Academy for Security Policy (Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik, BAKS) of Germany has recently published its analysis on the Middle Eastern military policies. According to the author of the analysis — Dr. Guido Steinberg — with the beginning of the “Arab Spring” in 2011, the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia escalated into a real Middle Eastern Cold War. The fact that some Gulf states and Israel have recently even signed peace agreements shows that Iran’s regional opponents have decided to form an alliance.

Even if the USA — Iran talks led by US President J. Biden resume, a “nuclear deal” with Iran in its previous form is unlikely. On the contrary, the conflict may escalate. Therefore, according to the BAKS analysis, Germany needs to critically review its interests in the region and be prepared for what is called a crisis scenario.
