On the Need for Dialogue Between the European Union and Russia

Praemonitus, praemunitus — “warned, so armed”

The leaders of Germany and France have initiated a direct dialogue between the European Union and Russia. At the same time, they are ready to confront other EU members and to persuade those who disagree with their position. It is also clear that internal disputes between EU members over Russia’s policy are beneficial to the Kremlin and fully in line with its strategic goal of discrediting common European values and dismantling the EU as an institution.

How such a situation arose in the politics of the leading EU countries and why Germany and France’s proposition was coordinated with Russia — will soon be demonstrated by the results of the parliamentary elections in Germany in the autumn of this year and elections in France in 2022.

The foreign policy initiatives to turn the EU to Russia could have been agreed during recent high-level summits and aimed at achieving the non-public interests of stakeholders. At the same time, do the political pensioner Merkel and the pro-Russian Macron represent the interests of the majority of the population of their countries? Doubts arise here. Some EU countries said a firm “no” and threatened not to participate in such EU summit with Russia. However, the confrontation on this issue within the EU is in the interests of Russia and the pro-Russian political leaders of some EU countries.

Perhaps the objects of negotiations and the results of the compromise reached on EU-Russia relations will be the state interests of other EU countries.
