International diplomacy is now in a state of neglect
The OSCE decision to appoint Helga Schmid, one of Germany’s leading diplomats, as Secretary General of the Organization has been reported in the German media. H. Schmid is one of the leading participants in the negotiations on a “nuclear deal” with Iran. Until now, she was the Secretary General of the European External Action Service, as the Deputy of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, where she has gained considerable experience.
The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, as the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, believes that international diplomacy is now in a state of neglect. After all, even among the member states of the Organization there is a confrontation that is more reminiscent of the events of the Cold War, when there is no talk of constructive dialogue… “Our principles are not respected, our commitments are not implemented”, said E. Rama, addressing the OSCE Ministerial Council and meaning the conflicts in the Organization’s area of responsibility. In particular, in Ukraine, Belarus and Nagorno-Karabakh. E. Rama reminded that the Organization was once the main forum for East-West dialogue. If nothing else, everybody realizes that the OSCE is “the last address, the last stop, the last refuge” in international diplomacy.
