Adoption of the Long-Term EU Budget and Climate Agreement

One of the important achievements of the European Council meeting on December 10–11 this year, was the adoption of the seven-year budget of the European Union, which provides for allocation of significant funds, in particular, to overcome the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. To reach this decision, Germany, which holds the presidency of the Council of Europe, has had to make significant efforts to avoid the veto promised by Poland and Hungary.

It was also decided to strengthen environmental protection measures until 2030. The European Council endorsed a binding EU target of a net domestic reduction of at least 55 % in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990.

Besides, the EU Council extended for the next 6 months the sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine and its occupation of Crimea. The last time the European Union continued the economic restrictions on Russia until January 31, 2021. The sanctions will now be in effect until the end of July next year.

The EU Council also agreed on new sanctions against Turkey. They are quite soft in nature. Because in a dispute with its NATO partner, the European Union has not yet resorted to tougher economic sanctions.

The geopolitical race of the main countries-subjects of international politics does not stop. Their main efforts are mainly focused on demanding additional material and financial benefits. The only exception is the Paris Agreement, the decision on which was adopted as a non-priority and is conditioned by the need to return the United States to the orbit of European affairs.
