South Korea’s New Role in the Confrontation Between the United States and China

Like other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, South Korea is alarmed by tensions between China and the United States. And in this confrontation, it can hardly remain neutral. After all, it has an agreement with the United States on joint defense, and there are American military bases and other military infrastructure on its territory. On the other hand, the United States remains an important partner for South Korea, especially when it comes to its relations with Pyongyang. With this in mind, the South Korean leadership demonstrates a clear readiness to increase cooperation with the United States, and not only in the defense sphere.

On the bilateral agenda is a long list of issues, from regional stability, North Korea’s nuclear program, ensuring freedom of navigation in the world’s oceans, to climate change and cooperation in the development of a coronavirus vaccine. Almost all of them are somehow related to the growing role of the Celestial Empire and tensions in the US-China relations. At the same time, Washington’s new policy toward North Korea is taking shape, also in active coordination with Seoul.
