2020 Annual Report of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV)
In June 2021, the Federal Office for the Protection of the German Constitution (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz, BfV) published an annual report on the status of such activities in 2020. The report was presented to the public by Horst Seehofer, Federal Minister of the Interior, Building and Community, and Thomas Haldenwang, president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
The document contains information on anti-constitutional movements in the country, on organizations and groups that are opposed to a peaceful democratic legal order, as well as on espionage activities against Germany and illicit arms trafficking. Some phenomena are structured, ideologically and strategically assessed, in particular in the sections “Development Trends” and “Threats Potential”. The report significantly helps to find out the level of threats to the German state and society.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the German Constitution continues to determine the causes of threats, expose criminal networks, and investigate. As for other countries, their structures resort to secret and not always legal methods to obtain the necessary information and often at the expense of Germany. They direct considerable financial recourses and serious organizational efforts to it. Some states also try to purposefully organize disinformation campaigns in order to influence the public opinion and to destabilize society.
