The Prospect of Creating a National Security Council of Germany

German analytical centres are attentive to new challenges and threats that may cause new political crises. That is why the President of the Federal Academy for Security Policy (BAKS), Ekkehard Brose, recently announced a new approach to crisis management and managing new crisis situations in international relations. He believes that on the eve of the parliamentary elections in Germany this autumn, both politicians and think tanks are ready to support such a proposal, as it will improve the work of executive bodies, influence their strategy and improve practical skills of the political leadership in its foreign policy activities.

Ekkehard Brose points out that such ideas are already being worked out by the leading political parties that will run in the Bundestag elections. In particular, pro-Russian politician, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and potential candidate for Chancellor of Germany Armin Laschet proposes to create the German National Security Council. The Free Democratic Party of Germany has already enshrined such a proposal in its election program. According to the statement of the candidate for Chancellor of Germany from the “Greens” Annalena Baerbock, introduction at the Federal Chancellor of Germany’s Office of joint responsibility in these matters is quite appropriate.

The German National Security Council will not be a completely new organizational structure of state administration. For example, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has approximately the same functions. But Germany’s current approach to the organization of state crisis management means that the state will respond in a modern way to new geopolitical challenges.
