The Importance of Protecting the State’s National Interests in the Information Space

Forecasting the development of the security environment around Ukraine for the period up to 2030 shows that the subjects of national security need to take urgent measures to protect national interests in the information space, an integral part of which is cyberspace.

It is obvious that today the main opponent of Ukraine in cyberspace is the Russian Federation, which uses the entire available arsenal against our state in the information space. Anti-Ukrainian activities on the part of the Russian Federation are carried out in the form of an information campaign, which includes a set of complex and separate information operations, information campaigns and other activities, most of which are carried out using cyberspace.

At present, the expert community of Western countries is discussing possible scenarios for the Russian Federation to pursue its interests in the format of a “hybrid confrontation”, primarily against Ukraine. At this, the leadership of the Russian Federation and its security services are in constant search of new forms of realization of their geopolitical interests and achievement of the desired goals.

At present, Ukraine is working on a draft Cyber Security Strategy of Ukraine for 2021–2025. Accordingly, it is essential for the subjects of its development to determine the most appropriate conceptual approaches to the content of such work.

Further development of the situation around the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine, its temporary occupation of part of Ukrainian territory, and the Joint Forces operation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions directly depend on the effective implementation of the state cybersecurity policy, especially in terms of building Ukraine’s potential for cyber defense and active cyber influence, socio-political situation in the country and especially in the Donbas, Ukraine’s position in the international arena.
