Geopolitical Landmarks for Berlin, Europe and the World
At the end of June 2020, on the eve of Germany’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, the leaders of the two major European states, President of France Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, had an official meeting. They are the leaders of the two states that form the so-called power axis of Europe. Both politicians seek to show Europe their own power.
The main task of the meeting was set the day before. Namely, — ensuring unity between Berlin and Paris in times of crisis. Without close cooperation with France, the German Chancellor will not have the necessary room for political maneuver in Brussels. Significant political achievements are expected from A. Merkel herself and Germany’s presidency of the Council of the EU over the next 6 months. The geopolitical guidelines for Germany, as the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, and for the European community as a whole are clearly determined. All that remains is to overcome the national selfishness of some EU member states and create conditions for effective reconstruction of Europe after the pandemic.
A separate ambitious task for A. Merkel personally is to demonstrate to herself, Europeans and her people her ability to work and efficiency in the competition for leadership in Europe with the traditional friend-rival France and its young ambitious President E. Macron. As a result of Germany’s presidency of the Council of the EU, it is most likely that a decision will be made to continue A. Merkel’s political future. In the next six months, a tense struggle for geopolitical influences and positions for influence is expected not only in Europe but also in the world.
