The Federal Academy for Security Policy of Germany’s (Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik, BAKS) in the analytical study for July 2021 analyses the security on the European continent and in the transatlantic partnership in case if Germany refuses to participate in NATO’s nuclear deterrence. The problem has been exacerbated by the expiration of the Tornado fighter jets, which are in service with the German Air Force.

The question arises: will Germany have a new aircraft certified in accordance with US requirements for participation in nuclear deterrence operations, and will Germany continue to participate in NATO’s nuclear deterrence operations? The BAKS study explains why Germany benefits from such participation, as does the European and transatlantic security in general, and what price will have to be paid if Germany does not participate.
