Energy Aspects of China’s Middle East Policy. Part 1

China’s cooperation with the Middle East in the energy sector is throughout the value creation chain, from exploration and production to processing, and from investments to conclusion of service contracts. Chinese companies are actively involved in the construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure in the Middle East region: railways, airports, seaports, roads, telecommunications and other infrastructure projects that may later become part of the new “Silk Road” project.

China, through its active search for investment opportunities in the Middle East oil and gas sector, did significantly influence the dynamics of managing the region’s energy resources to its advantage. However, unlike the United States, the PRC does not have a particular desire to protect its national interests in the Middle East and other parts of the world by militarily force. Instead, it uses diplomacy, finding mutually beneficial economic cooperation with other countries to secure its interests.

Today, China is investing hundreds of billions of US dollars on virtually every continent into the economies of dozens of countries, while even the United States not always can afford this. It should be noted that the vast majority of recipients of Chinese investments, including Ukraine, are quite happy with them. As today the fate of many countries and peoples depends on the nature of Washington-Beijing relations, the USA and the PRC should resolve their differences, both in bilateral trade and in other spheres, only through negotiation and compromise.
