Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)
American statesman, 16th President of the United States (1861-1865) and the first of the Republican Party, the Great Emancipator of American slaves, the national hero of the American people.
His presidential activities have led to increased executive power and the abolition of slavery in the United States. Lincoln had included in the government of his opponents and was able to involve them to work towards a common goal.
During his presidency, the Civil War between North and South (1861-1865) took place, and a slavery in the country was completely abolished.
After the election for a second term, Lincoln triumphantly ended the war. Southerners were broken. Therefore new and progressive conquered the old and decaying. America has moved to a new stage of economic development, but the president has paid for it with his life. April 14, 1865 Lincoln was fatally shot in the theater, becoming the first killed US president (a total of 4 from 44 were killed, + 40 unsuccessful attempts). According to conventional wisdom and social surveys, Lincoln still remains one of the best and most beloved presidents of America.
