Dangers to the Country Due to Cyber Attacks
Recent developments, such as escalating tensions over Russian aggression against Ukraine and a series of Russian cyber attacks on Ukrainian government agencies, have prompted pragmatic Germany to consider possible prospects for aggravation across Europe. After all, such troubles can happen to Germany. Because none of the economic and political agreements with Russia guarantee Germany’s security. But won’t they attack Germany with cyber means if the Kremlin suddenly wants to and Putin benefits from it?
War on the Russian-Ukrainian border is still possible today. And the report of a massive hacker attack on the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and two state-owned banks on February 15 can be considered one of its preludes. And if so, Germany is also in the sights of Russian Internet soldiers, who are not without Putin’s knowledge practicing cyber warfare against the West. If he deploys it on a larger scale, Germany will be in a difficult position.
The crisis that Putin has caused around Ukraine has been able to stimulate domestic political processes and the growth of civic activism, even in prosperous and carefree Germany. The issue of civil protection and resilience of the state to natural or man-made disasters is a determining factor in its viability. Critical assessments of the readiness of public services to respond to crises addressed to the central government and local governments in Germany should draw attention to this important topic in Ukraine as well.
