“Air Defense, Shells, Armored Vehicles, But So Far Without Aircrafts” — What to Expect from the New Ramstein

Ivan Sichen, an expert of the Independent Analytical Center for Geopolitical Studies “Borysfen Intel”, for Gazeta.ua

The next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format began in Brussels. The new meeting will bring Ukraine ammunition, armored vehicles and raise the issue of fighter jets again. They may also decide on the supply of additional air defense systems. This was stated in a comment for Gazeta.ua by military analyst Ivan Sichen.

“Now, firstly, we will receive shells for rocket and artillery systems. Because this is a consumable material — thousands of them are spent every day at the front. Perhaps we will be supplied with armored and rocket-artillery equipment. This is necessary because so far Russia outnumbers us. But is not superior in quality. Probably, there will also be ammunition, means communications, intelligence”, Sichen said.

The issue of aircrafts is still difficult, the analyst reminded.

“Although there has already been formed an international coalition ready to transfer fighter jets and teach our pilots to fly. Aircraft maintenance and repair are much more complex than for other equipment. But there is also a problem that one or two fighter jets won’t resolve anything. They must be supplied by squadrons or regiments. In the course of this “Ramstein” they may decide to supply additional air defense systems. And we will be able to close the sky even better. They can also supply a certain number of drones. Because we need them too”, added Sichen.

Ukraine now needs several types of air defense systems, the analyst explained.

“We need additional air defense systems. They are divided into those that defend the country — the same Patriot and our S-300s, which cover Kyiv. Odesa, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv are covered much worse. There are strikes there every night. And it is not possible to destroy all missiles. There are also air defense systems that cover troops. They are more mobile and protected, but have a shorter range. Now we need them badly. Because the enemy is superior in aviation and this complicates the counteroffensive”, Sichen said.

The meeting in Brussels will discuss the issue of providing Ukraine with air defense systems, shells, ammunition and artillery, as well as capabilities for repair and maintenance of military equipment. Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov stressed that one of the priorities of the June 2023 “Ramstein” in Brussels would be the details of the “aviation coalition”.
