NATO Is Going to Oblige Its Members to Provide Collective Assistance in Space

Geopolitics Inexorably Extending to Outer Space

NATO members are forced to abide by their Allied commitments, including in space. This is where geopolitical aspirations of the Alliance’s opponents, such as China and Russia, are now manifested. That is why NATO wants to establish mandatory space-related mutual assistance for Allies.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Der Spigel, “I expect the heads of state and government to decide that a serious attack on our satellites or other capacities in space can trigger the alliance (mutual defense) case”. The same should apply when at least one of the NATO allies is attacked from outer space. Jens Stoltenberg believes that “the same would apply to space as to land, water, in the air and in cyberspace. An attack on one is an attack on all — and can be answered by everyone”.

Besides, NATO Secretary General is demanding that both Germany and other Allies increase their defense spending. According to NATO, only 10 out of 30 member states can reach level of 2 % of GDP this year. In Germany, this figure is 1.53%. Back in 2014, NATO member states agreed to increase defense spending to 2 % of GDP over the next ten years. In this way, the Alliance responded to Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian Crimea. Former US President Donald Trump at one time also vehemently criticized Germany for its modest defense spending.
