“Consequences of the Accident at Zaporizhzhia NPP may be more severe than in Chernobyl” — What Russia Is Preparing for

Ivan Sichen, an expert of the Independent Analytical Center for Geopolitical Studies “Borysfen Intel”, for Gazeta.ua

Russia is considering a terrorist attack scenario at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The threat of an accident is very high, and the consequences will be worse than after the Chernobyl tragedy. This was told in a comment to Gazeta.ua by military expert Ivan Sichen.

“The threat of an accident at Zaporizhzhia NPP is quite high. Moreover, in war conditions, the consequences can be even more severe than at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Russia is beginning to face a global crisis that could push it to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Firstly, all Moscow’s attempts to destroy us and our democratic order have failed. Secondly, the counteroffensive of the Defense Forces of Ukraine continues and is succeeding. One of the directions of attack is precisely aimed at the de-blockade of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The Russian occupiers will be forced to leave. Thirdly, we are successfully recapturing our lands in the South of Ukraine, which Moscow has already declared its “new territories”. According to the military doctrine of the Russian Federation, it “has the right to inflict nuclear strikes on all, including non-nuclear countries, if their actions threaten the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation”. This has been repeatedly confirmed by the leadership of Russia, including Putin himself”, Ivan Sichen said.

Creation of an artificial accident at a nuclear power plant can be equated to a nuclear strike, the expert explained.

“At the same time, there is no need to blow up the cooling pond of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Especially as it is currently very difficult to fill it due to the actual destruction of the Kakhovka reservoir by Russians. In order to create an accident at a nuclear power plant, it is enough just to stop supplying electricity there, which is needed to cool the reactors, namely, the operation of pumps that pump water from ponds. By the way, electricity is supplied from the territory of Ukraine under our control. The Russians have repeatedly interrupted it. In such cases, the NPP is powered by its own diesel generators. However, fuel is most likely not supplyed there, so it will eventually run out. Besides, graphite rods can be extracted from reactors. As a result, there will be an uncontrolled nuclear reaction and the reactor will explode, as it happened at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986”, added Ivan Sichen.

The Russians may not do this on purpose, because the consequences of such an accident will affect Russia itself, the expert said.

“Although anything can be expected from the Russian ruling elite. They are no longer people or beasts, but creatures from hell. Much more terrible and real is not the blowing up of ponds or the cessation of electricity supply to the nuclear power plant, but the placement of Russian heavy weapons and ammunition on its territory. From the Zaporizhzhia NPP Russians fire across the Dnipro River at Nikopol and its surroundings. Shells can explode directly in their storage areas on the territory of the nuclear power plant or when fired. At present, such cases are already taking place. Most of the ammunition is obsolete and stored since Soviet times. And the new ones that are being produced now are of poor quality. The military command of Russia has generally forbidden to use them, since they explode directly in the barrel of the gun. All this can happen at the nuclear power plant. Not to mention the negligence of the Russians, who can create an accident without any special plan. And when there are weapons and ammunition at the nuclear power plant, it is especially dangerous”, added Ivan Sichen.

Russia is considering a terrorist attack scenario at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. This was reported by Ukrainian intelligence and the Security Service of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said. According to him, the Intelligence received information that Russia is preparing a terrorist act with the radiation leakage.

Russian occupiers mined the cooling pond of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. This was stated by the Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov. Having destroyed the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, Russians destroyed the normal access of water to the coolers at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, said the Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
