“Russia in Despair. The Armed Forces of Ukraine Are Ready for a Counteroffensive” — What Is Happening in Bakhmut and Why the Kremlin Has Returned to Missile Terror

Ivan Sichen, an expert of the Independent Analytical Center for Geopolitical Studies “Borysfen Intel”, for Gazeta.ua

Russia is losing ground in Bakhmut. The occupiers, under pressure from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, had to withdraw from part of the city’s territory. The enemy goes on the defensive in those sectors of the front where he previously attacked. Russia has spent its resources, which it had accumulated since September 2022. That is why it has returned to the missile terror of Ukraine. This was stated in a comment for Gazeta.ua by military analyst Ivan Sichen.

“We are asked to maintain information silence. But with cautious optimism we can say that this is the beginning of the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It may be a little early to say so, but there are such trends. Because we have exhausted the enemy. The founder of Wagner is already saying that it is necessary to withdraw. Because they are running out of deterrence. The enemy goes on the defensive in those sectors of the front where it previously attacked. Russia has spent its resources, which it had accumulated since September 2022. And didn’t get any results”, says Sichen.

That is why the Russians again have resorted to massive attacks, the analyst explains.

“We can draw parallels between what is happening in the east and these attacks. When the Russian offensive stalled, they again began to intimidate civilians. Because the entire offensive that they had planned for so long did not work out and they did not achieve their goals. Now we see revenge for their failures. This is just the Kremlin’s despair. The Russians are trying to demoralize the population of Ukraine and somehow force it to negotiate. But of course, on Moscow’s terms. They hope that they will force the leadership of Ukraine to abandon the counteroffensive. And also their idea is to destroy our civilian infrastructure. Because these strikes have no military significance. The same was at the beginning of a full-scale war”, adds Sichen.

In some areas of Bakhmut in Donetsk region, the enemy was counterattacked by units of the Defense Forces. Due to this, the occupiers left some positions in the city. At the same time, the situation in the Bakhmut sector is “quite complicated”. This was announced by Commander of the Eastern Group of Forces, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi.

The Bakhmut direction remains the epicenter of hostilities. The enemy increases the activity of heavy artillery and the number of air strikes. The battle of Bakhmut continues.
