The Parties Change Their Tactics

The political crisis caused by the military coup in Myanmar is gaining momentum. It is reaching a new level after a nearly month-long lull in the confrontation between supporters of the ousted civilian government and the military. Numerous civilian casualties have already been reported. The international community’s attention to the events in this country has increased, as the coup and the local population’s counteracting it will have serious consequences for the whole of Southeast Asia.
And perhaps the most important issue: the authorities managed to keep the security forces from disintegrating and prevent their mass transition to the side of the protesters. Therefore, as the experience of Venezuela and Belarus shows, this situation may persist for a long time. In this case, it is likely that Chinese influence in the region will increase. After all, China will remain the only external force ready to provide economic and political assistance to the new regime, despite human rights violations and questionable internal legitimacy.
