The discrepancy between claims and reality regarding the international role of the European Union is not a new phenomenon
Changes in global policy, primarily related to the coming to power in the United States of the Biden administration, the need to revise the EU’s relations with China and other partners in Europe, especially Great Britain, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and so on, force the leadership of the European Commission to determine the right tactical and strategic steps for its activities.
The situation is exacerbated by differences in views on overcoming the consequences of the pandemic, the size of defense spending, conflicting inter-party relations of leading EU politicians from Germany in the year of parliamentary elections to the Bundestag, as well as increasing in the EU internal problems and contradictions nourished by interested of internal and external players.
The EU’s geopolitical positioning on the world map will remain relevant. At the moment, European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen has come under pressure when she needs to deal with the world’s most powerful geopolitical players. This is once again confirmed by the article in the popular German news magazine Focus, which discusses President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen’s position on such issues. Or, to be more exact, about her personal role in the situation in which Europe now has found itself.
